| Presenting a SWOTSWOT results are often presented in a quadrant chart format with information displayed in bullet form in each section of the chart, as illustrated here, showing elements to be considered. Because the results of your SWOT can be vital to budget considerations and resource allocation, it is vital to communicate clearly and memorably to support your strategy effectively. While this display may be a useful adjunct, it will not by itself convey your message. So much information, often generalized to fit into the bulleted format, is difficult for the recipient to absorb. Often, using the elements of the chart as the basis of your compelling story is a better approach.
All stories have a beginning, a middle and an end. Start at the beginning to set up all the key factors, the setting -- the current state of your organization and how you are positioned, the conflict -- strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats -- and the desired outcome.
The middle of the story would be the details and supportive data you have gathered, beginning with strengths, moving to weaknesses and threats, and ending with opportunities. You are telling the story of why the weaknesses and threats are vital considerations that are immediate and urgent to build the case for the opportunities that could be achieved with the right resources, decisions and support for corrective or change strategies.
The conclusion brings together the case you have built with a statement of action, using the SWOT as a supportive tool. At left is an example of a completed SWOT for consideration of expansion of integrated pharmacy patient care services for oncology.Remember that a SWOT is typically a preliminary step to strategy development or clarification. While it does not have to be absolutely fact-based, it must be objective and based on some experience, analysis, consensus or research. Realizing this, there is still room for creativity and informed judgment in the development of evolving strategy.
Although the concept of the SWOT seems simple, its execution can be challenging. It is best conducted within a work group, assuring broader perspective, challenges and refinement. ْ
