This is the flip side of analytical thinking. The aim of creative thinking is to develop new ideas, find new solutions, take chances.
Here it is important not to be confined by logic. New ideas often come about by considering what is impossible or very unlikely and finding ways of making it happen. For example, many people said that powered flight aeroplane flight was impossible until the Wright Brothers first did it. Even then, many newspapers across the USA refused to report it because they still believed it to be impossible.
Creative thinking can lead to new insights. A classic example is Albert Einstein. He imagined what it would it would be like to ride on a beam of light and as a result came up with his two theories of relativity. He conducted many other of these thought experiments to test his theories. While there is only one Einstein, anyone can use creative thinking techniques to generate new ideas. You don't have to be a genius.
If you are involved in any situation or career where innovation or originality is important, learning to think creativity is vital.
Tips
Irish writer George Bernard Shaw wrote, "the reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
Consider in what ways you could be unreasonable today. How could this progress you in your life?
Try this exercise to get the creative juices flowing: go through the dictionary and pick out sixty words at random by marking them with a pencil without looking. If you select a word that is not a noun, find the next word that is. At the end of this process you should have sixty nouns. Write each one on a separate piece of paper and put them in a bag. Then pick out two at random and see how you can link them together. For instance if you picked violin and pillow you could link them in the following ways: -
A violin has a case: so does a pillow.
If someone is playing a violin badly you might want to put a pillow over your ears
If someone is playing a violin badly you might smother them with a pillow
Do the same with the words you pick and try to come up with as many alternatives as possible. This exercise is designed to help you make connections between different concepts - one of the fundamentals of creative thinking.
