| By ELWEEN LOKE THE power of the mind — a demonstration of what our minds are capable of does not involve fancy capes or top hats.
Simply, it is being able to use our brains to its full potential.
Visitors who attended the 8th Malaysia Festival of the Mind learned this when attending the two-day event last weekend.Held at the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) Kampar campus, there were various talks, workshops and exhibitions, which sought to enlighten visitors on the importance of mental literacy.
Utar marketing student Lee Wei Wei, who visited the exhibition booths with her two friends after class, said she was amazed by a test she took for the sub-conscious mind.
The 23-year-old was told to think of a close-ended question and to allow her sub-conscious mind to direct her to the answer.
“I had to hold up a necklace with a pendant attached and swing it towards either the words ‘yes’ or ‘no’ written on a piece of paper.
“But the pendant did not exactly swing towards the answer I wanted. Maybe, my mind was telling me, otherwise,” she said.Meanwhile, 11-year-old Fong Yan Bin came all the way from Ipoh with his father to attend some of the talks with hopes of learning from the speakers.
Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung, who opened the festival, said activities organised in conjunction with the festival could help the public have a better understanding of how their minds work.
“The public can get a better comprehension of the immense power the brain holds,” he said.
Pointing to himself, Chor said having a good memory was important in a politician’s career.
“Sometimes we forget the names of people we meet and can only remember their faces.
“This puts us in an awkward situation,” he quipped.
Malaysian Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM) chairman Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik said talks were also conducted in 60 schools throughout Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Pahang, Terengganu, Negri Sembilan, Malacca, Johor and Sabah in conjunction with this year’s festival. ْ
