The use of The Spalding Method, a research-based, multi-sensory, structured language program, builds strong decoding and encoding skills for reading, spelling and writing. It enables students to gain an understanding of how the English language works. Children look, listen, say and write simultaneously and concentration is focused. All class teachers are trained in this method, so there is consistency and continuity from class to class and from year to year.
Small class sizes allow for a caring, supportive approach to teaching and learning. Each class is staffed by highly qualified teachers who are knowledgeable about the education of young girls. Girls benefit from the expertise of specialist teachers in Music, Physical Education, Visual Arts, French, Mandarin, Library and Learning Enhancement teachers in Mathematics and English. In addition, a program of visiting speakers and excursions are provided to generate in girls an expanding view of the world. Although the Dalton Plan is not formally implemented in Hillingdon, the philosophy of developing self-motivated, independent young women who begin to take responsibility for their learning is incorporated. Students work collaboratively with learning buddies and are encouraged to set goals and carry them through.
Critical thinking skills are explicitly taught through De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats. This program allows children to think more deeply and more comprehensively by using the framework of the different coloured hats. Formative assessment strategies enable students to articulate their learning goals and to understand the success criteria needed to achieve them. Feedback from their teachers, learning buddies and peers allows girls to consider ‘Where to next?’ in their learning.
Technology is widely used across the Hillingdon Preparatory School to support student learning. All students have access to networked computers and sets of iPads. There are interactive whiteboards in all classrooms, a central computer lab and two computer hubs. Technology is incorporated into activities across the curriculum.
